The Grange was the residence of Captain Charles Sturt from 1841 – 1853.
Sturt could claim to be one of the foremost explorers of Australia, opening up Australia to settlement by virtue of his expeditions to the Macquarie Marshes, along the length of the River Murray and into the heart of central Australia.
The family built their home in what was called the Reedbeds and established an orchard and mixed farm on 390 acres.
The Grange property has vastly reduced in size since Sturt’s time, but you can still grasp a sense of what it was like for Sturt to live amongst the tall river gums with the river meandering its way past the house.
