Darlinghurst, 2 Darley St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010, Australia

About the event

Built in 1890 as a two-storied residence for the pastoralist Edward Chisholm (1837 - 1898), the nine-bedroom, seven-bathroom property is a slice of Australian history, sitting on a 2000sqm block with sweeping level lawns and trees almost as old as the house itself.

“Iona” was sold in 1908 to Adela Taylor, wife of Sir Allen Taylor, a former lord mayor of Sydney and creator of Taylor Square. In 1912 the house was converted into a private hospital to function as a psychiatric facility. Most of the mansions in the Darlinghurst area were demolished during the 1920s and 1960s but “Iona” survived due to its use as a hospital until 1977.

Its custodians since then have included Australian film director Baz Luhrmann and his Oscar-winning wife Catherine Martin.

Tours are at 1:00pm, as the 11:00 and 12:00 tours are at capacity. Tea and coffee is provided.
