About the event

Enjoy a stroll along and around leafy Addison Rd learning the stories of long-demolished mansions, heritage homes that remain and other intriguing features of the area.

Addison Road was built as one of the main roads to service the area known as Clifton Heights, now Eastern Hill, when it was subdivided and auctioned in April 1877. Two-year-old Katherine Wentworth had inherited the land, originally granted by Governor Macquarie to Gilbert Baker and Richard Cheers, from her father, D’Arcy Wentworth, in 1827.

After 50 years and two marriages - to Benjamin Darley and William Bassett - it took a special Act of Parliament, the Bassett-Darley Estate Act, to eventually release this land for sub-division.

Addison Road was named after Stephen Addison, brother-in-law of Katherine, and soon hosted fine homes such as Hawthorn, Brightside, Maybank, Uyeno and Oyama, none of which survive today. Further sub-divisions, new streets and grand terrace houses followed.

Norfolk Island pines, Port Jackson figs and Ficus hillii all contribute to the charm of today's Eastern Hill, which we discover on this two-hour tour.

We finish at The Roast Office, one of Manly's best cafes.
