34 Queen Street, home to Dickerson Gallery, is a fine example of a Victorian Federation terrace house with three floors, ornate filigree ironwork and bay windows.

The building has an intriguing ownership history beginning with Dowell Philip O'Reilly - the Australian poet, short story writer and politician. In 1894 O'Reilly was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. He moved the first motion in favour of women's suffrage carried in the New South Wales parliament.

Dowell O’Reilly was the father of Eleanor Dark. One of Australia's finest writers of the 20th century, Eleanor was born in 1901. The address of 34 Queen Street was recognised in letters published by Dark as her childhood home.

Later in the mid-20thC, the building occupancy included incarnations as an antique showroom and as a boarding house, all adding to the colourful history of this house.

In the 1970s, celebrated Australian painter Robert Dickerson purchased the property as the family residence, but also housed his studio for a period, before becoming a signature gallery space in Woollahra

Established in 1992, Dickerson Gallery represents a finely selected group of emerging Australian artists, as well as regularly displaying works by Robert Dickerson. It is run by Sam Dickerson (the son of Robert Dickerson) who now continues to trade as an art dealer from this address. Jennifer Dickerson, poet and former arts journalist, lives on site as well.

The HHA is currently engaging a Heritage Studies Masters student intern to research the architectural and occupancy history of 34 Queen St Woollahra. This is part of our new partnership with The University of Sydney Museum and Heritage Studies Program.

The HHA are delighted to welcome The Dickerson Gallery into our property network.
